Cathodoluminescence (CL) microscopy is the analysis of light emitted by a material when excited by an electron source, can reveal intrinsic properties and trace elements chemistry in solids. This discussion will serve as an introduction to the CL technique and review key applications and challenges addressed by CL highlighting some of the latest research from the world of nanophotonics, micro-LED device development and microanalysis.

Dr Jonathan Lee is an application scientist supporting Gatan's luminescence products, including the Monarc Cathodoluminescence (CL) detector. With about 6 years’ experience in the CL field, previously he has used CL spectrometry and time resolved CL to characterize defect levels in narrow and wide bandgap semiconductor materials, while more recently demonstrating the Monarc's capacity for mineral analysis coupled with energy dispersive x-ray (EDS) analysis to determine trace-element chemistry.
